Call for Applicants: California Water Protector Paid Internships 

​

Description: 

Save California Salmon (SCS)  is currently accepting applications for Water Protector Interns between the ages of 16 and 30. This is a paid internship offering 10-20 hours per week. Submissions from older individuals may also be considered.

 

Internship projects and duties will include the following categories:

 

  • Youth Outdoor Activities

  • Youth Activism

  • Teaching & Education

  • Media and Policy Work

  • Campaign and Community Organizing

 

Save California Salmon works on a variety of issues, including youth organizing and education, fisheries and flow restoration, protecting rivers and oceans, opposing new reservoirs, pipelines, and diversions, and addressing chemical and agricultural pollution  affecting salmon and rivers, and supporting the efforts of water protectors. 

 

SCS’ focus areas include the following watersheds: Eel River, Trinity River, Klamath River, Smith River, Sacramento River (and tributaries), Bay Delta (and tributaries), and California’s North Coast. SCS collaborates with local Tribes and Tribal communities, fishermen, clean water advocates, subsistence fishermen, scientists, and allies to advocate for protection of Tribal beneficial uses, Tribal water and fishing rights, and access to clean water and fish.

Requirements:

  • Experience working with Tribes, underrepresented people, and/or youth  

  • Experience organizing and facilitating events and activities

  • Experience working with rural communities and youth

  • Reliable transportation 

  • Strong computer, writing and organizational skills

 

Potential projects include:

  • Curriculum revision and development with SCS staff 

  • Organizing and co-facilitating outdoor activities and events for youth and families

  • Assisting the Director with daily tasks and duties as assigned

  • Creating educational content and interactive activities for events and presentations

  • Assisting with tabling at events

  • Supporting the creation of media and training materials

Helpful Qualifications: 

  • Experience or interest in policy, communications, water policy, Tribal water issues or youth-focused initiatives

  • Experience working with youth and/or in educational settings

  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office and Google Workspace

  • Strong professional writing skills (press releases, articles, research papers, etc.)

  • Knowledge of NEPA and CEQA processes and related policy work, including working with relevant agencies

  • Experience organizing events (both online and in-person) and public speaking

  • Experience working with Tribes or Tribal organizations

  • Experience in organizing campaigns, trainings, and public events 

  • Understanding ofTribal and water rights law, including  the Clean Water Act and Endangered Species Act

  • Familiarity with salmon and water quality-related sciences

  • Applicants must be at least 16 years old

  • Native preference applies

Location:

This is a remote, project-based position; however, applicants must reside in Northern California. Internships with California universities will also be considered. 

Projects primarily must benefit the Sacramento, Klamath, Eel, and Trinity rivers and their communities. The Klamath/Trinity Rivers, North and Mendocino coast watersheds, and Sacramento River or Bay/Delta are priority. Training and project support are available.

Compensation:

The pay rate is $18-$22/hr, depending on experience.
